A History of The Chuckwagon Lodge
The Chuckwagon Lodge has been a part of the unique community of Torrey for almost five decades.
The Lodge was opened by Randy and Claudia Austin in 1973. The pair had taken a wrong turn on their way to Lake Powell, landing them in the town of Torrey. They fell in love and purchased the Chuckwagon.
Randy Austin quickly became an integral part of the community of Torrey. Along with running The Chuckwagon Lodge, he was also the Torrey Fire Chief for several years, then the Wayne County Fire Marshall after that. He served on the Liquified Petroleum Gas Board for four years under Governor Michael Leavitt. Austin even volunteered as an ambulance driver and driver trainer for the Wayne County EMS for many years.
Through it all, Randy remained a fixture at the Chuckwagon. He was often seen sitting in front of the store, sipping coffee, and greeting visitors.
The Chuckwagon Lodge Today
Today, the staff at The Chuckwagon Lodge has continued Randy’s tradition of hospitality and service. Whether you’re a local or a first-time visitor to Torrey, you’ll be greeted with a smile. Our staff is there to offer suggestions for things to do, places to dine, and more.
Our property has expanded over the years. Today, we have a Lodge with clean, spacious rooms perfect for resting up before a day of exploring Southern Utah. There are even fresh baked goods available each morning that are perfect for a grab-and-go breakfast before heading out for a day of exploring, and hiking equipment for anything you forgot to pack.
Join Us for a 50th Anniversary Celebration
On June 17, 2023, we’re celebrating 50 years of The Chuckwagon Lodge! Join us for an afternoon of celebration and fun! The party kicks off at 11 am and will include a variety of events and giveaways. Guests of The Chuckwagon Lodge and the public can enjoy free swimming, bounce houses, music, and more. There will be free donuts and drinks, and food trucks will be available. We’ll even have a permanent jewelry expert on-site to help you purchase a beautiful new piece.
