There are plenty of reasons to book a stay at hotels in Torrey Utah this September. But there may be an even bigger reason to book a stay this coming October.
On October 14, 2023, Southern Utah will experience an annular solar eclipse. This unique type of eclipse will make for an incredible experience for anyone in its path. Sometime between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., day will suddenly become almost as dark as night, and the “ring of fire” effect that this type of eclipse is known for will be visible across Southern Utah.
If you don’t live in its path and want to experience the annular solar eclipse, a stay in hotels in Torrey Utah is a great choice. Chuckwagon Lodge will fall right in the path of the annular eclipse. View the eclipse from our resort, or head to nearby Capitol Reef National Park for an even more unique viewing experience.

How an Annular Solar Eclipse Differs From a Total Eclipse
When most people think of solar eclipses, they think of a total solar eclipse. But there are actually four different types of solar eclipses.
A total solar eclipse is perhaps the most famous kind. During this type of eclipse, the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth. The light of the Sun is completely blocked out by the Moon. During this time, the Sun’s corona is visible, and it is safe to remove any solar viewing glasses to look directly at the Sun.
During an annular solar eclipse, the Moon still passes between the Sun and the Earth, and all three are perfectly lined up. However, because the Moon is at its farthest point in its orbit away from the Earth, it isn’t large enough to block out the Sun’s light. Instead, a ring of light is still visible around the edges of the Moon. This is often referred to as the “ring of fire.” This incredible display is equally as unique as a total solar eclipse.
Any time that the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, but the three are not perfectly aligned, a partial solar eclipse occurs. A portion of the Sun will appear to be covered, resulting in a crescent shape against the Sun. The final type of eclipse is the hybrid solar eclipse. During this type of eclipse, the Moon’s shadow moves across the curved surface of the Earth, shifting from a total solar eclipse to an annular solar eclipse.
Safely Viewing an Annular Solar Eclipse
Without proper eye protection, viewing an annular solar eclipse can be dangerous. Many people think that you can view an annular eclipse without protection in the same way that you can view a total solar eclipse at its peak. However, the light of the Sun is never totally blocked during an annular eclipse. As a result, the Sun’s dangerous rays are still present.
It’s important to wear proper eyewear for the entire annular solar eclipse. Sunglasses, including both polarized and prescription lenses, are not enough. Instead, you’ll need special solar viewing glasses. If you can’t get these, you can also build your own solar viewer to safely view this event.
Viewing the 2023 Annular Solar Eclipse
If you want to experience an annular solar eclipse in person, the upcoming solar event is your chance. On October 14, 2023, the annular solar eclipse will enter the U.S. on the coast of Oregon. It will cross the state, then enter Northern Nevada. It will begin in Utah at the Western edge, near the center of the state, before passing over Southern Utah.
The annular solar eclipse will be visible from hotels in Torrey Utah starting around 10:30 a.m. and ending around 11:58 a.m. Chuck Wagon’s property will be a great spot to view the eclipse. But you can also travel into nearby Capitol Reef or other national and state parks, like Bryce Canyon, to see the eclipse. The sudden darkness and light from the ring of fire will make the towering peaks and landscapes of these parks look even more unique.
